Ellie is Potty Trained!!

Ellie will soon be 2, and I decided that I was done with buying diapers!  I know people think it's crazy to try to "knock it out" in 3 days… but I liked the idea of doing something intensive for a few days and then being done with it.. and not having to worry about having pull ups/accidents etc. I bought the 3daypottytraining ebook back with Maree, and the lady outlines all of the common problems/mistakes that usually happen when potty training… and I totally agreed with her!  Then she tells you exactly what to do :)

I should also point out, that while I follow her method outlined in the book, I do not, however, follow the sleep time part.  She suggests waking your kid an hour after falling asleep and waking them an hour before they wake up…. Both times around I wasn't about to wake up my sleeping kid (that's my sleep too!) so I do let her use a pull up during nap/nighttime. They haven't been confused by this.

The 3 days went incredibly different from how they went with Maree.  Maree never had shown an interest in the potty EVER.  Ellie, on occasion, would sit in the bathtub and say potty… and I'd put her on the toilet only to discover she'd pooped in the tub!!  But she seemed to have more awareness. Granted, that didn't make a difference in training!  The goal is to give them lots of fluids so they have lots of opportunities to go potty.  With Maree, she would start going and literally continue going on me/the floor the whole time as I scooped her up and ran her to the bathroom to let out the last drops. She did this 11 times the first day… Ellie, on the other hand, only had 1 actual accident and it was the very first one.  She started going and it made it to the floor (which is how we adults know they're going) and I ran her to the bathroom.  From then on, she would just dribble a little bit into her panties making it SO hard for me to tell if she needed to go!! I had to start checking her often to see if she was dry/wet. If she was wet, we ran to the toilet and she would go a little.  It was like she was doing this weird holding pattern!

Now I've debated sharing the #2 part of potty training, but lots of people asked me how that part of it went last time around.. so this time, I'll share it and hope the girls don't hate me in 12 years! The poop thing is a crazy deal with every kid.  When both were in diapers, Maree would sneak off and go.  Ellie, she would halt all activity and have this look.  When confronted about going, she'd say "2 minutes!!!!" SO, when potty training this….with Maree, I caught her hiding and rushed her to the bathroom… and she refused to even sit down on the toilet… but it was a do or die moment for her and I told her to "look!" and she could see it coming out and she thought it was the most amazing thing ever and never had an issue after that.  Ellie, well, she was sneaky.  She would wait until I was busy with Maree or making lunch or dinner etc. and during that brief moment, she'd do her business. I have to say that at some point during this, you're going to be frustrated, ready to cry, and probably need a drink. It gets better!!!  Make sure your significant other or someone is there to tell you you're doing a great job and to keep at it.  You'll need encouragement :)

So here's how it all went down.  I rush re-read the book at 11:00 the night before training (not the best idea) and then raided the craft/game cabinet to pull out things she hasn't seen in a while so that they would hold her interest longer

Then I made her this lovely potty chart for each successful trip she got a sticker

Earlier that week Ellie picked out her own under ware from Walmart

Here's where I screwed up a bit.  With Maree, I knew she didn't like candy so I couldn't use that as a reward.  I had raided the target 1$ bins for toys and Maree thought it was amazing to get a toy after going potty.  I assumed that Ellie would love it too so I got her a few of the things below.  Let's just say I should have thrown some dumdum suckers, or skittles, or something into the bag of goodies.  It took me until day 3 to realize that the sucker was WAY better motivation for her.

The actual day of training, I had a friend take Maree to pre-school, and as soon as she left, Ellie got to open up her panties and put a pair on.  Then she had to throw away all of her diapers like a Big Girl!!

I obviously rescued these later :)

She LOVED having panties she picked out

Then, the day began.  I kept trying to get her to drink ANYTHING to make her have to go and we just played different games in the mean time until it happened!

This one wasn't the best idea, because I couldn't see that she had gone potty… and of course she did in the 10 minutes she sat there.

SO adorable to see their buns in undies for the first time!

End of Day 1… 9 pairs of wet under ware.

Day 2!

So proud of herself for being a Big Girl!
Day 3 started off great - we played, we even went to the park b/c she had consistently been telling me "potty" when she had to go.  After she woke up from nap time though, she had a #2 accident and I was devastated.  I felt like she had it in the bag.  I freaked out that I just spent 3 days doing this for nothing!  Luckily I have a wonderful husband who calmed me back down.  I continued all the training/treats/applause up until bed time.

I hadn't spent this much 1 on 1 time with Ellie since she was a baby!  Just a little swinging selfie!
I can't leave out Maree.  Marc took her to play at the Play Factory on Sunday and took her swimming that day too… she LOVED it.  After training was over, I took her out for ice-cream.

Post Potty Training… she's  had 1 potty accident and that I don't feel like counted.  Maree was going first and Ellie I think thought she should go at the same time.  Unfortunately, right after training, Ellie got diarrhea probably from getting her eye teeth.  This was slightly traumatic for both of us. She was freaked out by it, and since you can't lay them down to change them, it wasn't fun to clean up!!  Now that the teething is better we're back on track with all of that.  Today, at Walmart, she told me she had to go potty.  We RUSH from the back of the store to the front and she goes successfully!  Then 20 minutes later, we're in the forever long line and behind an extreme couponer and Ellie tells me she has to go potty.  Some how I miraculously was able to convince her to hold it because I had already been waiting in this line for 20 minutes…. and she had another successful trip once we were checked out!  Amazing how smart little kids are :)  BTW. If you are interested in doing this 3 day potty training, shoot me a message/email and I can maybe save you buying the ebook!
